I’m looking forward to this publication, Like a Tree Universally Spread, about the nineteenth- to early twentieth-century Tamil yogin named Sri Sabhapati Swami. His unique system of yogic meditation known as the “Rājayoga for Śiva”. The full experience of which is compared to being like a “tree universally spread.”
This book begins with a biographical biography of Sabhapati, his editor Shrish Chandra Basu, and his students that was compiled using textual sources and the author’s fieldwork for an ethnographic study. The analysis of Sabhapati’s works in numerous languages is then followed by a thorough explanation of his aiva cosmology and religious views. Following a thorough discussion of Sabhapati’s system of “ivarjayoga” and its subtle physiology, an examination of Sabhapati’s aesthetic fusion of audible sound and visual diagrams, as well as an assessment of the function of “science” in the swami’s writings, are presented. Sabhapati also piqued the interest of writers and occultists outside of South Asia, therefore his meeting with the Theosophical Society’s founders and the incorporation of his methods into the spiritual disciplines of Aleister Crowley are also given significant consideration.
